i got a new sketchbook this week and it is literally the worst one i’ve ever owned. i wish i hadn’t torn the tag off so i could tell you the brand and you’d never purchase anything they make. the pages tear out, ink bleeds through, its garbage, but i’m going to fill it regardless.

on to the drawings.
sharkttack
the shark attack is drawn with a new quill pen i got. it was the 2nd quill drawing i did, the first is on the last page of my old sketchbook which i’ll upload soon; i’m waiting to see if it is goin to be used for a design job.

pusheead

the skeleton key drawing is a little pushead tribute and it was really fun to draw. i’m using it for a show flyer for a show with comadre in grand rapids in june.

bullettooth
finally, the gun cap dude was for nave. he realized today after having the miconception for three years that this parlor near the train tracks was called ‘bullet tattoos’ and offered ‘tooth piercings’, its simply bullet tooth tattoos & piercings. heres a bullet toothed guy to illustrate that idea. maybe i’ll draw a tooth piercing dude too.

call me butter, cause i’m on a roll. two days ago, i posted some bulletins looking for work (WHICH I STILL AM ACCEPTING, PLEASE EMAIL vass@ladisputemusic.com). In forty eight hours, i already completed three of these jobs, and i’m pretty proud. I’ll show you:

basingermock

The first is a teeshirt for a band called Basinger. They saw the bummer-free zone thumbs up design that I did in my previous entry and wanted something similar with the ‘hang loose’ sign. Drawing hands intrigues me, and I have the convenient reference right in front of me (at my fingertips, lol).

loftt-copy

The second is a 1 color lineart design for a church in Indiana called the Loftt (intentional misspelling). I personally am not a religious guy, and I thought that would lead to me having difficulty coming up with something, but this one came to me and I was pretty surprised with the end result.
color-copy-72dpi

Last and certainly not least, I did this graphic for a music blog called Bedwetting Cosmonaut (bedwettingcosmonaut.blogspot.com). He essentially asked for a banner that included an astronaut (or cosmonaut in this case) and so I was inspired by the cover of Brand New’s Deja Entendu. Obviously, the colors used are very similar. This one was a lot of fun, and I’m still getting used to digitally painting with a wacom. He hasn’t seen it this big yet, i just emailed small previews, so if you’re reading this CJ, hope you dig it.

Like I said earlier, I’d love to keep working, so if you have a band that wants a shirt or album art, I’d love to work with you. As these people can attest to, I don’t charge much and you end up with something sweet (at least, I’d say its sweet).

here are a couple things i did at the airport or right before the trip. ld got asked to do a bigger tour this fall so i wanted to do all new designs for it, a couple are here. they aren’t quite finished but pretty close. the pencil sketch with the flower and candle is also for that tour, and the pencil sketch of the fast food employee is for native. i’ll also be uploading some stuff soon (within a few days if all goes well) that i’ll be working on for australian friends Quiet Steps and To The North. Also, fellow aussie Ruined Lighthouse Records, don’t think I forgot about you. I finished your design on the plane and am waiting for you to approve before I show it off here.

Sketches July 26, 2009

Here are just some inks of things I’m working on. Looking forward to digitizing them and getting them cleaned up.
These first two, an owl and a group of mice, are going to be together for a to the north shirt. they’ll be seperated by text. i drew them on seperate pieces of paper so i could draw them bigger and resize them in photoshop, so here they are as seperate scans.
owlCOPYmiceCOPY

Up next is a design for quiet steps. Its goin to be a 2 color tshirt print, black and neon green on white, and i’m also going to paint it digitally for their record art.

quietstepsCOPY

lastly are a couple lighthouses i sketched for a la dispute shirt. the pencily one was a bigger attempt at the inked one which was my initial idea but drawn very small. plan to paint it in watercolors then bitmap it for screen printing.

Paper Tats

for whatever reason, i’ve been painting a lot of tattoo style watercolors this week. heres what i did, the majority having been done in the past 24 hours.
these aren’t the greatest scans; for some reason the scanner doesn’t pick up the grey stain of the paper and it makes it white. i could use some tips on how to increase scanning accuracy if anyone has them.

More Tat Paintings

a couple more from the past day or two. the raccoon was after we hit one on the drive home from bob’s bday, my first time being in a car that killed an animal. the triclops dog is my favorite thus far:

Even More

I’ve been doing more than one of these a day and am pretty proud of the results thus far. Here is a shark, for shark week, an eye of providence since i had a small square of paper left, and a self portrait post-haircut and glasses.

Keeping it up

trying to do one or more of these a day, and a couple on some days to make up for days i miss. heres three from last week. i’m back in grand rapids now which means i don’t have a scanner (someone let me borrow one please?) so updates might be less frequent or in different medium (digital camera pics that suck).

My Friends

This post is for three of my friends who are better artists than I am and I sometimes rip them off.

1. Ben Sears
http://www.flickr.com/bensears
Ben drums in a band called Mountain Asleep who rule. His drawings are all over the midwest in the form of shirts and album covers for every band ever. He likes to do gratuitous details; really long curvy things like intestines and a lot of clouds and things. I’m trying not to rip him off anymore.

2. Mez
http://mezxxxartdesign.wordpress.com
Mez makes me embarassed. She is a few years younger than me and way better than me. She lives in Australia and I’ve admittedly never met her but maybe I’ll be in that hemisphere again. Her digital work is very detailed and clean, and her colored pencil work makes me jealous.

3. Matt Barnes
http://www.holysmokesdesign.com
Matt is in the awesome band Bears. Every time we hang out, we share sketchbooks and I get really jealous of his style, then spend the next week or so trying to emulate it. His screen printing is super pro and makes me want to start printing again and wish I wasn’t so lazy. He also always gives me things to make me better and encourage me to keep working.

Tour Sketches

got to use a scanner today for the first time in forever, so here are some sketches. all in ink and/or pencil. some are for designs, some are just for fun.
