I’m really proud to say that I did this design for the February design over at Shallow Water. head to http://www.thisisshallowwater.com/ to purchase one and read a short interview with me about the design. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of my design goes to MassEquality, a Massachusetts based LGBTQA activist group which you can find more about at http://www.massequality.org/.

Where are you from?
Originally from northwest indiana, but presently living in Boston Mass.

How long have you been designing?

Ive been drawing since I was a little kid, designing Merch for my own bands through high school, and for hire since 2008/9

What connection did you feel with Mass Equality?

The gay rights movement has made great steps in the last few years, and a lot of people think that more liberal states like Massachusetts have already won the war, but there is a lot of work left to do. They are working on developing youth outreach to help kids who get bullied and as someone that dealt with that a lot in school, I saw it as a perfect combination to help two groups of people at once.

Tell us about the design? How did it come to be? What inspired it?

It was important to me that I come up with something that was a symbol of solidarity between people, without being overt about who those people may be. The handshake was a great foundation for that idea, and the eagle perched atop was just something aesthetically pleasing to make the design more full.

How would you describe your style of design work?

In the past year or two, I’ve become very focused on traditional American style tattoo art, although I am not a tattooist myself. I’m not formally trained at all, so my style has become the product of a lot of random influence from different fields.

What do you do outside of art?

I play bass in a band called la dispute which takes up most of my time. The rest is likely spent drinking coffee with my roommates in Boston. #1088

Where should people go to check out your work?

Adamxvass.com is my main hub, but I also post a lot of sketches an progress photos on instagram and twitter under the user name @adamvass.

OH HAI

Adam Vass hit me up about doing Mass Equality about a month ago, particularly for their work with the youth and anti-bullying, and we were unsure about when we’d be able to get the design going. His band, La Dispute, was about to tour Europe and timelines seemed tricky. However, Adam was so motivated and inspired by the charity that he told me that he started the artwork and it just kept going until it was done. Mass Equality has a simple and powerful message. In their words, they serve to advance lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights and to be sure that everyone in the LGBT community feels safe and free of discrimination. They work through political channels to ensure that laws and policies are non-discriminatory and provide “equal rights and opportunities in school, in marriage and family life, at work and in retirement.

my design will be available as of 6pm EST at thisisshallowwater.com. thanks.
